LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/AP)- A 20-year-old from Charles County has been arrested and charged in the death of Marckel Ross, an 18-year-old Central High School student who was shot and killed while walking to school in September.

Travon Donnell Bennett, of Bryans Road, is charged with first and second degree murder. He is currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

On September 11, 2012, shortly before 7 a.m., officers were called to the 6100 block of Old Central Avenue to investigate a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Ross suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives believe Ross was shot during a failed robbery.

The Central High principal said Ross, an 11th grader, was a strong student and bright spirit. He was also a student athlete who ran track.
